Indications
- Treatment of Parkinson's disease and syndrome
- Relieves symptoms of parkinsonism
- Manages tremor, dysphagia, sialorrhea
- Increases motor recovery after stroke
Description
- Levodopa is the metabolic precursor of dopamine
- Carbidopa is a dopa decarboxylase inhibitor
Dosage & Administration
- Initiate with one tablet three or four times a day
- Titration upward may be required
- Individualized maintenance dose
- Dosage adjustment according to therapeutic response
Interaction
- Symptomatic postural hypotension with antihypertensive medicines
- Decrease in bioavailability with ferrous sulphate
- Reduction of therapeutic effects with dopamine-2 receptor antagonists
- Possible severe orthostatic hypotension with selegiline
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Carbidopa and Levodopa
- Narrow-angle glaucoma
- Malignant melanoma activation
Side Effects
- Dyskinesias including involuntary movements and nausea
- Cardiovascular effects like palpitation and hypertension
- Gastrointestinal effects like vomiting and bleeding
- Nervous system effects like dizziness and hallucinations
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Effects on human pregnancy are unknown
- Potential hazards should pregnancy occur
- Potential excretion in human milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Not recommended for medicine-induced extrapyramidal reactions
- Cautious administration to patients with cardiovascular or pulmonary disease
- Observation for changes in intraocular pressure during therapy
