Indications
- Topical treatment of acne vulgaris in patients 12 years of age and older
Pharmacology
- Adapalene binds to retinoic acid nuclear receptors
- Modulator of cellular differentiation, keratinization, and inflammatory processes
- Decreases microcomedone formation
- Benzoyl peroxide has bacteriocidal and keratolytic effects
Dosage & Administration
- Apply a thin film to affected areas once daily
- Use a pea-sized amount for each area of the face
- Avoid eyes, lips, and mucous membranes
- Not for oral, ophthalmic, or intravaginal use
Pediatric use
- Safety and effectiveness not established for patients under 12 years
Interaction
- Caution with concomitant topical acne therapy
- Possible cumulative irritancy effect with peeling, desquamating, or abrasive agents
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component
Side Effects
- Erythema
- Scaling
- Dryness
- Stinging/burning
- Most commonly reported adverse events include dry skin, contact dermatitis, application site burning, irritation
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No well-controlled trials in pregnant women
- Use during pregnancy only if benefit justifies risk to fetus
- Caution when administered to nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Avoid exposure to sunlight and sunlamps
- Wear sunscreen when sun exposure cannot be avoided
