Indications
- Treatment of all types of epilepsy

Composition
- Enteric-coated tablets with Sodium Valproate BP 200 mg
- Syrup with Sodium Valproate BP 200 mg per 5 ml
- Controlled release tablets with different strengths of Sodium Valproate and Valproic acid
- Injectable solution with Sodium Valproate BP equivalent to Valproic Acid 500 mg per 5 ml
Pharmacology
- Sodium Valproate endowed with anti-epileptic activity
- Mechanism of action possibly related to increased brain levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)
Dosage & Administration
- Oral administration for epilepsy, bipolar disorder, and prophylaxis of migraine
- Initial and maintenance doses for adults and children
- Injection dosage for adults and children
- Recommendation to administer after food
Interaction
- Non-specific inhibitor of drug metabolism
- Significant interactions with Phenobarbital, Phenytoin, Warfarin, Aspirin, etc.
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to the drug
- Liver dysfunction
- Restricted use during pregnancy and in women of childbearing potential
Side Effects
- Common side effects like anorexia, nausea, and vomiting
- Effects minimized with enteric-coated tablets
- CNS effects including sedation, ataxia, and tremor
- Rare occurrence of rash, alopecia, and stimulation of appetite
- Elevation of liver enzymes observed in up to 40% of patients
- Potential for fulminate hepatitis, acute pancreatitis, and hyperammonemia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Crosses the placenta
- Associated with neural tube defects in newborn if exposed during the first trimester
- Excreted in breast milk with no significant risk to the child
Precautions & Warnings
- Monitoring of liver functions before therapy and during the first 6 months
- No undue potential for bleeding before major surgery
- Care in renal impairment, pregnancy, and breast-feeding
- Elimination in urine may lead to false interpretation of urine ketone test
- Sudden withdrawal should be avoided
