Indications
- Treatment of all types of epilepsy

Composition
- Sodium Valproate tablet: 200mg
- Sodium Valproate syrup: 200mg in 5ml
- Sodium Valproate controlled release 200 tablet: 200mg
- Sodium Valproate controlled release 300 tablet: 300mg
- Sodium Valproate controlled release 500 tablet: 500mg
- Sodium Valproate injection: 500mg in 5ml
Pharmacology
- Endowed with anti-epileptic activity
- Mechanism may relate to increased brain levels of GABA
Dosage & Administration
- Tablets may be given once or twice daily
- Syrup should be given in divided doses
- Dosage varies for epilepsy, bipolar disorder, and prophylaxis of migraine
- Injection dosage varies for adults and children
Interaction
- Acts as a non specific inhibitor of drug metabolism
- Significant interactions with Phenobarbital, Phenytoin, Warfarin, Aspirin
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to the drug
- Liver dysfunction
- Use restricted during pregnancy and in women of childbearing potential
Side Effects
- Common side effects like anorexia, nausea, vomiting, minimized with enteric coated tablets
- Effects on CNS include sedation, ataxia, tremor
- Rarely rash, alopecia, stimulation of appetite
- Elevation of liver enzymes in plasma observed in up to 40% of patients
- Fulminate hepatitis rarely
- Hepatic injury, acute pancreatitis, and hyperammonemia in children and those on multiple antiepileptic agents
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Crosses the placenta
- Exposure in first trimester associated with neural tube defects
- Excreted in breast milk
- Breast-feeding probably causes no risk to the child
Precautions & Warnings
- Monitor liver functions before and during therapy
- Ensure no potential for bleeding before major surgery
- Take care in renal impairment, pregnancy, breast-feeding, systemic lupus erythematosus
- Ketone metabolite elimination may lead to false interpretation of urine ketone test
- Avoid sudden withdrawal of therapy
