Medicine Details

Indications

  • Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma
  • Acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)
  • Relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (AR): Seasonal & Perennial Allergic Rhinitis

Pharmacology

  • Selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist
  • Inhibition of cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
  • Correlation with pathophysiology of asthma & allergic rhinitis
  • Effects on airway edema, smooth muscle contraction, and inflammatory process

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult dosage: Montelukast 10 mg tablet once daily
  • Pediatric dosage: Montelukast 4 mg oral granules once daily
  • No dosage adjustment in hepatic or renal insufficiency
  • Similar pharmacokinetic profile in elderly

Interaction

  • No clinically important effects on the pharmacokinetics of other drugs
  • Used concomitantly with a wide range of commonly prescribed drugs without evidence of clinical adverse interactions
  • Recommendation for clinical monitoring with potent cytochrome P450 enzyme inducers

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to any component of the product

Side Effects

  • Common: Diarrhoea, fever, gastrointestinal discomfort, headache, nausea, vomiting, upper respiratory tract infection
  • Uncommon: Anxiety, arthralgia, depression, dizziness, hallucination, muscle complaints, sleep disorders
  • Rare: Angioedema, disorientation, hepatic disorders, pulmonary eosinophilia, suicidal tendencies, tremor

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Crosses placenta in rats and rabbits
  • Caution during pregnancy and lactation due to potential excretion in human milk

Precautions & Warnings

  • Not indicated for use in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
  • Continued therapy during acute exacerbations of asthma
  • Not to be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids
  • Caution in patients with known aspirin sensitivity

Overdose Effects

  • Adverse experiences consistent with the safety profile of the product
  • Supportive measures recommended in the event of overdose
