Indications
- Treatment of bronchospasm in bronchial asthma
- Prevention of bronchospasm in bronchial asthma
- Treatment of reversible airway obstruction associated with bronchitis
- Treatment of reversible airway obstruction associated with emphysema
- Relief of exercise-induced bronchospasm
- Prophylactic use before exertion to prevent exercise-induced asthma
Pharmacology
- Selective β2-adrenoceptor agonist
- Acts on β2-adrenoceptors of bronchial smooth muscle
- Little or no action on β1-adrenoceptors of cardiac muscle
- Provides short-acting bronchodilatation (4-6 hours)
- Fast onset of action (within 5 minutes)
- Anti-inflammatory effect on mast cells
- Inhibition of release of bronchoconstrictor mediators
Dosage
- Administer by oral inhalation
- Shake well before each spray
- Adult maximum dose: 8 puffs in 24 hours
- Children maximum dose: Half the adult dose
- Prophylactic dose for exercise-induced bronchospasm
- Chronic therapy dose for adults and children

Interaction
- Avoid concomitant use with non-selective beta-blocking drugs
- Potentially serious hypokalaemia from β2-agonist therapy
- Monitor serum potassium levels in certain situations
Contraindications
- History of hypersensitivity to salbutamol or any other components

Pregnancy & Lactation

Precautions & Warnings
- Risk of paradoxical bronchospasm
- Clinically significant cardiovascular effects in some patients
- ECG changes such as flattening of the T wave
- Immediate hypersensitivity reactions
- Use with caution in patients with underlying cardiovascular disorders
- Use with caution in patients with convulsive disorders
- Use with caution in patients with hyperthyroidism
- Use with caution in patients with diabetes mellitus
- Use with caution in patients who are unusually responsive to sympathomimetic amines
- Aggravation of preexisting diabetes mellitus and ketoacidosis with large doses in intravenous administration
Use in Special Populations
- Safety and effectiveness in children 4 years of age and older have been established
