Indications
- Prevention of uterine atony
- Prevention of postpartum hemorrhage
- For use following caesarean section under epidural or spinal anesthesia
Pharmacology
- Analog of oxytocin
- Causes contraction of the uterus
- Binds to oxytocin receptors
- Increases uterine tone
Dosage & Administration
- Single intravenous dose of 100 mcg
- Administered by bolus injection
- To be used as a single dose only
Interaction
- No specific reported drug interactions
Contraindications
- Not to be administered prior to delivery of the infant
- Not for use in elective or medical induction of labor
- Not for use in patients with hypersensitivity to oxytocin or carbetocin
- Not for use in patients with cardiovascular diseases
- Not intended for use in children

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Contraindicated during pregnancy
- Small amount may cross into breast milk of nursing women
- Not expected to present significant safety concern for nursing infants
Precautions & Warnings
- Inadequate uterine contraction may require additional doses of oxytocin or ergometrine
- May cause hyponatremia
- Cautious use in epilepsy, migraine, asthma patients
- Monitoring for changes in blood pressure in eclampsia and pre-eclampsia patients
- Not recommended for elderly patients
Overdose Effects
- Enhanced pharmacological effects associated with uterine hyperactivity and pain
- Treatment consists of symptomatic and supportive management
