Indications
- Treatment of novel or re-emerging pandemic influenza virus infections
Description
- Favipiravir is approved for manufacture and sale in Japan as an influenza antiviral
- Selective inhibition of the RNA polymerase of the influenza virus
- Believed to be effective in treating COVID-19
- Used when other influenza antiviral drugs are not effective or insufficiently effective
Pharmacology
- Metabolized into favipiravir ribosyl triphosphate (favipiravir RTP) by an intracellular enzyme
- Selectively inhibits RNA polymerase of the influenza virus
- Effective against all types and sub-types of human influenza A, B, and C viruses in vitro
Dosage & Administration
- Usual adult dosage of 1600 mg twice daily on Day 1, followed by 600 mg twice daily from Day 2 to Day 5
- Total treatment duration of 5 days
Interaction
- Animal studies indicate decreased RBC production, increases in liver function parameters, and increased vacuolization in hepatocytes
Contraindications
- Contraindicated for pregnant women and women who may possibly be pregnant
Side Effects
- Common side effects include diarrhea and increase of blood uric acid levels
Pregnancy & Lactation
- May cause delayed development or death of embryos during the early stage of pregnancy
- Should not be given during pregnancy
Precautions & Warnings
- Not recommended for pregnant women
- Confirmation of non-pregnancy in women of childbearing potential before use
- Thorough contraception measures from the start of the treatment to 7 days after the end of the treatment
- Caution for hepatic and renal impaired patients
Use in Special Populations
- Only approved as an experimental drug
- More studies needed about its efficacy, toxic reactions, and use in children
