Indications
- Prophylaxis of angina pectoris
Pharmacology
- Relaxation of vascular smooth muscle
- Vasodilator effect on peripheral arteries and veins
Dosage & Administration
- Dosage adjustment as per individual patient
- One 2.6mg sustained release tablet/capsule in morning and evening
Interaction
- Potential interaction with vasodilators, beta-adrenergic blockers, tricyclic antidepressants, alcohol, PDE5 inhibitors, aspirin, heparin, and dihydroergotamine
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to nitroglycerin
- Contraindicated in acute myocardial infarction, marked anaemia, head trauma, cerebral haemorrhage, or closed angle glaucoma
Side Effects
- Headache at onset of treatment
- Tachycardia
- Postural hypotension
- Syncope
- Cyanosis
- Methaemoglobinaemia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No evidence on safety during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients predisposed to closed-angle glaucoma
- Avoid abrupt discontinuation
- Monitor closely during long-term treatment
Overdose Effects
- Peripheral vasodilation with fall in blood pressure
- Reflex tachycardia
- Monitoring of cardiac function and general supportive measures recommended
