Pharmacology

Non-peptide angiotensin-II receptor antagonist. Blocks vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin-II.

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual starting dose: 40 mg once a day
  • Blood pressure response is dose-related over the range of 20 to 80 mg
  • Additional blood pressure reduction may require a switch to combination therapy
  • No initial dosage adjustment necessary for elderly patients or patients with renal impairment
  • Pediatric use not established
  • Recommended to monitor patients with hepatic impairment

Interaction

  • Increased risk of renal impairment and loss of antihypertensive effect when co-administered with NSAIDs
  • Co-administration with aliskiren in patients with diabetes should be avoided

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to the product or any of its components

Pregnancy & Lactation
