Indications
- Hypertension
- Cardiovascular prevention
Pharmacology
- Non-peptide angiotensin-ll receptor antagonist
- Blocks vasoconstrictor and aldosterone secreting effects
- Selective binding of angiotensin-ll to AT1 receptor
- Greater affinity for AT1 receptor than AT2 receptor
Dosage & Administration
- Usual starting dose of 40 mg once a day
- Dose-related blood pressure response
- Antihypertensive effect apparent within 2 weeks
- Maximal reduction generally attained after 4 weeks
- Usable with other antihypertensive agents
- Can be administered with or without food
Interaction
- Increased risk of renal impairment with NSAIDs
- Co-administration with aliskiren in diabetes patients should be avoided
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to the product or its components

Precautions & Warnings

- Hypotension
- Careful monitoring in impaired hepatic or renal function
- Avoid concomitant use of an ACE inhibitor and angiotensin receptor blocker
Overdose Effects
- Likely manifestations of hypotension, dizziness, tachycardia
- Possible increase in serum creatinine
- Acute renal failure
