Dosage and Administration
- Should be taken 15-30 minutes before meals
- Recommended oral dose for adults and children

Mode of Action
- Dopamine antagonist that blocks dopamine receptors
- Gastroprokinetic action based on blocking effect of dopamine receptors in gastrointestinal tract

- Facilitates gastric emptying and enhances peristalsis
Interaction
- Concomitant administration of anticholinergic drugs may antagonize the antidyspeptic effect
- Antacids and antisecretory drugs should not be given simultaneously

Indications
- Relieves dyspeptic symptom complex including epigastric fullness, abdominal pain, nausea, and heartburn

Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the drug
- Neonates
- Gastrointestinal hemorrhage, obstruction, or perforation
- Prolactin releasing pituitary tumor (prolactinoma)
Side Effects
- Rare side-effects include transient intestinal cramps
- Rare extrapyramidal phenomena in young children and adults
- Possible increase in plasma prolactin level
- Rare allergic reactions such as rash and urticaria
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during first trimester only if justified by therapeutic benefit
- No evidence of increase in risk of malformations in humans
- Excretion in breast milk with lower concentrations than in plasma
- Nursing not recommended unless benefits outweigh potential risk
