Indications
- Treatment of hypertension
- May be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents
Pharmacology
- Blocks vasoconstrictor effects of angiotensin II
- Selective binding to AT1 receptor in vascular smooth muscle
- Does not inhibit ACE (kininase II)
Dosage & Administration
- Usual recommended starting dose of 20 mg once daily
- Dosage must be individualized
- May be increased to 40 mg if further reduction in blood pressure is required
Interaction
- No significant interactions with digoxin or warfarin
- No effect on drugs metabolized by cytochrome P450 system
- Potential deterioration of renal function with NSAIDs
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to any component of the product
Side Effects
- Well tolerated with adverse reactions similar to placebo
- Incidence of adverse reactions not dose related
- Most common adverse reaction is dizziness
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Discontinue if pregnancy is detected
- Can cause injury to the developing fetus
- Potential excretion in human milk
Precautions & Warnings
- May cause changes in renal function
- Associated with oliguria and/or progressive azotemia in susceptible individuals
Overdose Effects
- No experience of overdose reported
- Likely effects include hypotension and tachycardia
- Active support of cardiovascular system required in clinically significant hypotension
