Rectocare 0.4% (Ointment)

Indications

• Relief of pain caused by chronic anal fissures

Pharmacology

• Principal pharmacologic action mediated via the release of nitric oxide
• Relaxes internal anal sphincter

Dosage & Administration

• Nitroglycerin 0.4% ointment
• Inserted into the anal cavity with an applicator
• Inserted at least 1 cm into the anus
• Applied intra-anally every twelve hours
• Treatment may be continued until the pain abates, up to a maximum of 8 weeks

• Medicines for high blood pressure
• Diuretics
• Commonly used tranquillizers
• Medicines used to treat heart problems

Contraindications

• Common side effects: headache and dizziness
• Possible side effect: reduced control over bowel movements and leaking of bowel motions

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Not recommended for use during pregnancy
• Not recommended for use during breastfeeding

Precautions & Warnings

• Use with caution in patients with severe hepatic or renal disease
• Should not be used if patient suffers from severe anemia, glaucoma, hypotension, increased intracranial pressure

Use in Special Populations

• Not recommended for use in children and adolescents below 18 years of age

Overdose Effects

• Accidental overdose may result in hypotension and reflex tachycardia
• Excessive dosage may also give rise to methemoglobinemia
