Description
Rabe Gastro-resistant tablets are used for the treatment of active duodenal ulcer, active benign gastric ulcer, symptomatic erosive or ulcerative gastro-esophageal reflux disease, GERD long-term management, Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome, and the eradication of Helicobacter pylori in patients with peptic ulcer disease.

Pharmacology
Rabeprazole suppresses gastric acid secretion by inhibiting the gastric H+/K+-ATPase at the secretory surface of the gastric parietal cell.
Recommended dosage
- Active duodenal ulcer and active benign gastric ulcer: 20 mg once daily in the morning
- Erosive or ulcerative gastro esophageal reflux disease: 20 mg once daily for 4-8 weeks
- Gerd maintenance: 20 mg or 10 mg once daily, depending upon patient response
- Zollinger ellison syndrome: 60 mg once a day, may be titrated upwards to 120 mg/day based on individual patient needs
- Pediatric patients 1 to 11 years:
- Less than 15 kg: 5 mg once daily
- 15 kg or more: 10 mg once daily
- H pylori eradication: Rabeprazole sodium 20 mg twice daily, clarithromycin 500 mg twice daily, and amoxicillin 1g twice daily for 7 days
Administration
Should be taken in the morning, before eating, and swallowed whole without chewing or crushing.

Precautions and warnings
- Gastric or oesophageal malignancy: Possibility of malignancy should be excluded prior to commencing treatment
- Long term treatment: Patients treated for more than a year should be kept under regular surveillance
- Fracture risk: May modestly increase the risk of hip, wrist, and spine fracture, predominantly in the elderly or with other recognized risk factors
- Hypersensitivity reactions: Risk of cross-hypersensitivity reactions with other proton pump inhibitors
- Blood dyscrasias: Post-marketing reports of thrombocytopenia and neutropenia
- Hepatic enzyme abnormalities: Seen in clinical trials and reported since market authorization
- Hypomagnesaemia: Severe hypomagnesaemia reported in patients treated with PPIs for at least three months, monitoring recommended
- Vitamin B12 absorption: May reduce the absorption of vitamin B12
- Subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus: Associated with very infrequent cases of SCLE
- Interference with laboratory tests: Increased Chromogranin A (CgA) level may interfere with investigations for neuroendocrine tumors
- Renal and hepatic impairment: No dosage adjustment necessary
