Indications
- Treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus infection in adults
- Treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus infection in pediatric patients 2 years of age and older
Pharmacology
- Competes with deoxyguanosine triphosphate
- Inhibits all three activities of the HBV polymerase
- Incorporated into the DNA to inhibit HBV polymerase activity
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dose of 0.5 mg once daily for adults and adolescents 16 years of age
- Recommended dose of 1 mg once daily for Lamivudine-refractory patients
- Administered on an empty stomach
Interaction
- No significant drug interactions with Lamivudine or Adefovir dipivoxil
- Effects of co-administration with other drugs not evaluated
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Entecavir or any component of the product
Side Effects
- Most common adverse events are headache, fatigue, dizziness, and nausea
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No data on the effect on the transmission of HBV from mother to infant
- Not known if excreted in human milk
- Mothers should be instructed not to breastfeed if taking Entecavir
Precautions & Warnings
- Lactic acidosis and severe hepatomegaly with steatosis reported with nucleoside analogues
- Severe acute exacerbations of hepatitis B reported after discontinuation of treatment
Use in Special Populations
- Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients below 2 years not established
- Safety in geriatric patients not determined in clinical studies
- Dose adjustment recommended for patients with renal impairment
Overdose Effects
- No reported experience of Ertivix overdosage in patients
- Healthy subjects received up to 20 mg daily with no unexpected adverse events
