Indications
- Treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus infection in adults
- Treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus infection in pediatric patients 2 years of age and older
- Evidence of active viral replication
- Persistent elevation in serum aminotransferases
- Histologically active disease
Pharmacology
- Competes with natural substrate deoxyguanosine triphosphate
- Inhibits all three activities of the HBV polymerase
- Activates by kinases
- Incorporates into the DNA
- Inhibits the HBV polymerase activity
Dosage & Administration
- 0.5 mg once daily for nucleoside-treatment-naive adults and adolescents 16 years of age
- 1 mg once daily for Lamivudine-refractory patients
- Advised for entecavir to be administered on an empty stomach
- Missed dose instructions provided
Interaction
- No significant drug interactions with Lamivudine or Adefovir dipivoxil
- Effects of co-administration with other drugs not evaluated
- Monitoring advised for adverse events with coadministration
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to entecavir or any component of the product
Side Effects
- Common adverse events include headache, fatigue, dizziness, and nausea
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No data on the effect on the transmission of HBV from mother to infant
- Caution advised for breastfeeding mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Lactic acidosis and severe hepatomegaly with steatosis reported
- Exacerbations of hepatitis after discontinuation of treatment reported

- Safety and effectiveness not established in pediatric patients below 2 years of age
- Dose adjustment in renal impairment recommended
