Indications
- Treatment of major depressive episodes
- Treatment of panic disorder with or without agoraphobia
- Treatment of social anxiety disorder

Pharmacology
- Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI)
- Racemic bicyclic phthalate derivative citalopram
- Pure S-enantiomer
- More potent than the R-enantiomer in inhibition of 5-HT reuptake
- Low affinity for serotonergic or other receptors
Dosage
- Usual dosage is 10 mg once daily
- Maximum dosage of 20 mg daily
- Time required for antidepressant response
- Different dosages for different indications
Administration
- Administered once daily
- Can be taken with or without food
Interaction
- 2 weeks gap required with MAOI
- Different timelines for starting or stopping SSRI or related antidepressants
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Escitalopram or Citalopram
- Concomitant use with monoamine oxidase/pimozide
Side Effects
- Less sedating and cardiotoxic effects than tricyclic antidepressants

Pregnancy & Lactation

Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with epilepsy, cardiac disease, diabetes mellitus, angle-closure glaucoma
- Discontinue if convulsions develop
- Use with caution in patients with hepatic and renal impairment
Use in Special Populations
- Different dosages for elderly patients, children and adolescents
- Dosage adjustment for renal and hepatic impairment
- Caution in poor metabolizers of CYP2C19
