Description
Benzimidazole anthelmintic
Pharmacology
- Broad spectrum anthelmintic
- Vermicidal
- Ovicidal
- Larvicidal
- Blocks glucose uptake in helminths
- Depletes energy levels in helminths
- Inhibits tubulin polymerization
Dosage & Administration
- 400 mg dose for adults and children over 2 years
- 200 mg dose for children of 1-2 years
- Not recommended for children under 1 year
- 400 mg twice daily for hydatid disease in patients over 60 kg
- 15 mg/kg body weight daily for hydatid disease in patients less than 60 kg
- 400 mg once daily for giardiasis for 5 days

Contraindications
- Not for use in neonates
- Reduced dose for children under 10 kg
- Avoid in pregnancy or suspected pregnancy
- No general dosage reduction for concurrent diseases

- Regular monitoring of serum-transaminase concentrations
- Regular monitoring of leucocyte and platelet counts
