Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis
- Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria
- Improves health-related quality of life and work/activity productivity
Pharmacology
- Fexofenadine is an "inverse agonist" of the H1 receptor
- Potent and selective affinity for H1 receptors
- No evidence of antidopaminergic, antiserotonergic, anticholinergic, sedative, or adrenergic blocking activity
- Does not cross the blood-brain barrier
Dosage & Administration
- Different dosage for adults and children
- Dosage adjustment in case of impaired renal function
- Tablet: 60 mg, 120 mg, or 180 mg once or twice daily
- Suspension: 30 mg or 5 ml twice daily
Interaction
- Coadministration with erythromycin or ketoconazole can increase plasma level of fexofenadine
- No interaction between fexofenadine and omeprazole observed
- Antacid containing aluminium and magnesium hydroxide reduces bioavailability if administered 15 minutes prior to Exonid
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of its ingredients
Side Effects
- Headache, drowsiness, dizziness
- Nausea, fatigue
- Hypersensitivity reactions, tachycardia, palpitations
- Diarrhea, rash, urticaria, pruritus
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Limited data available for use in pregnant women
- Fexofenadine was found to cross into human breast milk
- Not recommended for mothers breast-feeding their babies
Precautions & Warnings
- Limited data in older people and renally or hepatically impaired patients
- Administered with care in these special groups
- Warned for patients with a history of or ongoing cardiovascular disease
- Unlikely to produce an effect on the ability to drive or use machines
Use in Special Populations
- Pharmacokinetics altered in renal impaired individuals
- Dose adjustment recommended for patients with decreased renal function
- Adverse events similar in elderly patients
Overdose Effects
- Dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, dry mouth reported with overdose
- No development of clinically significant adverse reactions reported
