Description

Indications
- Treatment of conjunctivitis
- Treatment of superficial ocular infections
- Adjunctive in systemic sulfonamide therapy of trachoma
Mode of Action
- Bacteriostatic effect
- Inhibition of bacterial synthesis of dihydrofolic acid
- Spectrum of activity against susceptible bacterial strains
Dosage and Administration
- Instill one or two drops into the affected eye(s) every two to three hours initially
- Taper dosages based on response
- Usual treatment duration: 7 to 10 days for conjunctivitis and superficial ocular infections
- Two drops every two hours for trachoma
- Topical administration to be accompanied by systemic administration
Interaction
- Incompatibility with silver preparations
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to sulfonamides or any preparation ingredient
Side Effects
- Local irritation
- Stinging and burning
- Bacterial and fungal corneal ulcers
- Less commonly reported reactions such as non-specific conjunctivitis and conjunctival hyperemia
- Potential severe reactions including Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C
- Potential for kernicterus in newborns
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Potential fetal harm when administered to pregnant woman
- Potential development of kernicterus in nursing infants
Precautions & Warnings
- Prolonged use may lead to overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms including fungi
- Bacterial resistance development
- Effectiveness may be reduced by para-aminobenzoic acid in purulent exudates
- Risk of sensitization recurrence and cross-sensitivity
- Discontinuation advice for hypersensitivity signs

- Pediatric use safety and effectiveness not established under two months of age
