Description
- Used for serious arrhythmias of the heart
- Broad spectrum antiarrhythmic medication

Dosage
- Tablet: 200 mg 3 times daily for 1 week
- Injection: Initial load of 150 mg per 100 mL infused over 10 minutes
Administration
- Amiodarone should be taken with meals for reduced stomach upset
Indications
- Treatment of ventricular fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, atrial fibrillation, and atrial flutter
Pharmacology
- Delays the heart's electrical system recharging
- Prolongs electrical phase during heart's muscle cell stimulation
- Slows speed of electrical conduction in the heart
- Reduces rapidity of firing of the heart's pacemaker
- Causes blood vessels to dilate
Interaction
- Interacts with b blockers and calcium channel blockers
- Increases blood levels of Digoxin and Flecainide
- Inhibits the metabolism of Dextromethorphan
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with cardiogenic shock
- Severe sinus-node dysfunction
- Second- or third-degree atrioventricular block
- Known hypersensitivity to the drug or its components

- Reversible corneal microdeposits
- Peripheral neuropathy and myopathy
