Indications
- temporarily relieves symptoms due to common cold
- temporarily relieves symptoms due to hay fever
- relieves cough due to minor throat or bronchial irritation
- relieves runny nose
- relieves sneezing
- relieves itching of the nose or throat
- relieves itchy, watery eyes
- relieves nasal congestion
- reduces swelling of nasal passages
Pharmacology
- contains antitussive, decongestant, and antihistamine agents
- antitussive agent has a central action on the cough centre in the medulla
- decongestant shrinks blood vessels in the nasal passage
- antihistamine provides relief from histamine triggered conditions
- antihistamine is a potent competitive histamine H1-receptor antagonist with mild CNS depressant properties
Dosage
- adults & children 12 years and older: 1 teaspoonful (5 ml) every 4 hours
- children 6 to under 12 years: ½ teaspoonful (2.5 ml) every 4 hours
- children 2 to 6 years: to be used with caution and as advised by the physician
- not to be used in children below 2 years old
Administration
- can be taken with or without food
- liquid doses should be measured carefully using the provided measuring device
Interaction
- may interact with certain MAO inhibitors
- caution should be exercised when using with antihistamines applied to the skin, antispasmodics, beta blockers, drugs for Parkinson’s disease, guanethidine, certain inhaled anesthetics, methyldopa, reserpine, scopolamine, tricyclic antidepressants, anti-seizure drugs, medicine for sleep or anxiety, muscle relaxants, narcotic pain relievers, psychiatric medicines
Contraindications
- should be avoided in patients with liver disease or asthma
- contraindicated in patients taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors
- contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to specific ingredients
- contraindicated during acute attacks of asthma
- contraindicated in patients with severe hypertension or severe coronary artery disease
Side Effects
- may cause drowsiness
- may cause dizziness
- may cause constipation
- other side effects include GIT discomfort, transient hypertension, dry mouth, restlessness, palpitations, allergic reactions, toxic psychosis, blood dyscrasia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- use in pregnancy and lactation is best avoided
Precautions & Warnings
- may cause drowsiness
- patients should avoid driving or operating machinery if affected
- alcoholic drinks should be avoided while on this medication
- use with caution in patients with specific conditions such as epilepsy, prostatic hypertrophy, glaucoma, hepatic disease, hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, stenosing peptic ulcer, pyloro-duodenal obstruction, or bladder neck obstruction
- consult a physician if symptoms do not improve within one week or are accompanied by high fever
Overdose Effects
- hospital admission is strongly advised in cases of overdose
- overdose may produce respiratory depression, paranoid psychosis, delusions, hallucinations, and convulsions
- treatment may include emptying the stomach by aspiration or gastric lavage, and using sedatives for nervous stimulation and convulsions
- severe overdose of phenylephrine hydrochloride may produce hypertension and associated reflex bradycardia, which may be treated with specific measures
