Description
A combination medicine containing Amlodipine, a calcium channel blocker, and Atorvastatin, a statin, used for hypertension, chronic stable angina, hypercholesterolemia, and reducing the risk of nonfatal MI and stroke.

- Pharmacology:
- Amlodipine acts as a peripheral arterial vasodilator
- Atorvastatin is a synthetic lipid-lowering agent
- Amlodipine reduces peripheral vascular resistance and blood pressure
- Dosage & Administration:
- Usual initial antihypertensive oral dose of Amlodipine is 5 mg once daily
- Atorvastatin dosage range is 10 to 80 mg once daily
- Amlodipine may be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents
- Drug Interaction:
- Concurrent administration of cyclosporine increases the risk of myopathy
- Amlodipine may potentiate the effect of other antihypertensive drugs
- Plasma concentrations of atorvastatin decrease when coadministered with antacids
- Atorvastatin may interact with oral contraceptives
- Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to Amlodipine
- Hypersensitivity to any component of Atorvastatin
- Active liver disease or unexplained elevations of serum transaminases
- Side Effects:
- Elevation in serum creatine phosphokinase levels with Atorvastatin
- Uncomplicated myalgia in Atorvastatin-treated patients
- Caution in using Amlodipine in patients with severe aortic stenosis
- Pregnancy & Lactation: Safety not established in pregnancy, not recommended during breastfeeding
- Precautions & Warnings:
- Caution in patients with heart failure using calcium channel blockers
- HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors associated with liver function abnormalities
- Rhabdomyolysis reported with drugs in the statin class
- Use in Special Populations:
- Safety and efficacy of Atorvastatin not established in children
- Efficacy and safety in older patients using recommended doses is similar to general population
- Therapeutic Class: Anti-anginal & lipid lowering drugs
