Description
- Benzimidazole anthelmintic
- Vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal activity
- Inhibitory effect on tubulin polymerization
Pharmacology
- Broad spectrum anthelmintic
- Blocks glucose uptake in helminths
- Depletes energy level in parasites
- Parasite immobilization
- Extensively metabolized, possibly in the liver
- Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract
- Principal metabolite albendazole sulphoxide
Dosage & Administration
- Adults & children over 2 years
- Children of 1-2 years
- Children under 1 year not recommended
- Albendazole given by mouth with meals
- Dose of 400 mg as a single dose for certain infections
- Dose of 400 mg daily for 3 consecutive days for certain infections
- Dose of 200 mg for children of 1-2 years
- Dose of 400 mg twice daily for hydatid disease
- Dose of 15 mg/kg body weight daily in two divided doses
Interaction
- No reported pharmacodynamic or pharmacokinetic interactions
Contraindications
- Not normally used in neonates
- Children weighing less than 10 kg may require dose reduction
- Not recommended during pregnancy or lactation
- No evidence to alter dose in renal, hepatic, or cardiac failure

- Changes in liver enzymes
- Reversible alopecia
- Rash
- Fever
- Blood disorders including leucopenia and pancytopenia
- Allergic shock if cyst leakage
- Convulsion and meningism in cerebral disease
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA Pregnancy category C
- Avoided in pregnancy and lactation unless benefits outweigh risks
Precautions & Warnings
- Blood counts and liver function tests before and during treatment
- Breastfeeding
- Exclude pregnancy before treatment
- Constant medical supervision with regular monitoring in Echinococcosis treatment
