Indications
- Management of hypertension
- Long-term management of angina pectoris
- Management of hemodynamically stable patients with acute myocardial infarction
Pharmacology
- Beta1 selective (cardioselective) beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist
- Hydrophilic beta-blocker
Dosage & Administration
- Initial dose of 50 mg for hypertension
- Initial dose of 50 mg for angina pectoris
- Intravenous injection followed by oral dose for acute myocardial infarction
Interaction
- Additive effect with catecholamine-depleting drugs
- Additive effect with calcium channel blockers
- Potential adverse effects with disopyramide and amiodarone
Contraindications
- Sinus bradycardia and heart block greater than first degree
- Hypersensitivity to atenolol or its components
