Indications
- Scabies
- Pediculosis pubis
- Pediculosis capitis
Pharmacology
- Benzyl Benzoate is toxic to sarcoptes scabiei and pediculosis
- Kills sarcoptes mite in 5 minutes
- Mechanism of action unclear, may act on the nervous system of the parasite
Dosage & Administration
- Applied to whole body except head and face for scabies
- One treatment may suffice, but a second application within 5 days can lessen failure possibility
- Alternatively, can be applied on three occasions at 12 hourly intervals followed by a hot bath
- For pediculosis, affected region is coated followed by wash 24 hours later
- May need to be repeated two or three times in severe cases
- Can be diluted with water for children

Contraindications
- Not to be used on face or broken/irritant skin
Side Effects
- Irritant to eyes, mucous membrane, and skin
- Hypersensitivity reactions reported
- Systemic symptoms reported following excessive topical use
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Inadequate evidence of safety in human pregnancy
- Should not be used during pregnancy unless essential
- Breastfeeding should be suspended during treatment
Precautions & Warnings
- Causes little skin irritation
- May cause a transient burning sensation
- Irritating to eyes, should be protected if applied to the scalp
