Description

Dosage & Administration
- Administered orally

Mode of Action
- Beta carotene is converted to vitamin A when required
- Vitamin C is a powerful reducing agent

Interaction
- Cholestyramine, Colestipol, Neomycin may cause decreased absorption of β carotene
- Oral contraceptives containing Oestrogen, Tetracycline and Aspirin may reduce circulating vitamin C levels
- Vitamin E may enhance the anticoagulant activity of anticoagulant drugs
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any of the components
Side Effects
- Hypercarotenosis with large amounts of carotenoids
- Gastrointestinal tract upset and renal stone formation with larger doses of Vitamin C
- Diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fatigue, and reduced resistance to bacterial infection with high doses of Vitamin E
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No teratogenic effects in humans
- Caution should be taken in prescribing to pregnant women
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution for heavy smokers and alcoholics with β carotene
- Caution for patients with hyperoxaluria with Vitamin C
- Caution for patients taking anticoagulant drugs with Vitamin E
