Description
Histamine analog, Relieves vertigo symptoms, Improves circulation in the microvasculature of the inner ear, Pressure reduction on the membranous labyrinth
Pharmacology
- Multifactorial mechanism of action
- Acts as histamine H1-receptor agonist
- Increases permeability of blood vessels
- Reduces endolymphatic pressure
- Prevents rupture of labyrinth
- Reduces asymmetrical functioning of sensory vestibular organs
- Increases vestibulocochlear blood flow
- Acts as histamine H3-receptor antagonist
- Elevates levels of neurotransmitters including serotonin in the brainstem
Dosage & Administration
- Initial oral treatment 8-16mg three times daily with meals
- Maintenance doses generally 24-48mg daily
- Maximum daily dose 48mg
- Dosage adjustment for individual patient needs
Interaction
- No proven hazardous interactions
- Potential mutual attenuation of effect with concurrent H1 antagonists
Contraindications
- Patients with phaeochromocytoma
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance

- Allergic rhinitis
- Severe hypotension
- Rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption
- Effects on ability to drive and use machines
- Rare reports of drowsiness associated with betahistine
Overdose Effects
- Symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia, ataxia, seizures
- Serious complications in intentional overdose cases
- No specific antidote
- Gastric lavage and symptomatic treatment recommended
