Zybex SR 150 mg (Tablet (Sustained Release))

Indications

• treatment of depression
• smoking cessation

Pharmacology

• selective inhibitor of neuronal re-uptake of catecholamines
• minimal effect on the re-uptake of indolamines
• mechanism of action is mediated by noradrenergic and/or dopaminergic mechanisms

Dosage & Administration

• usual adult target dose is 300 mg/day
• dosing should begin at 150 mg/day and may be increased to 300 mg/day
• full antidepressant effect may not be evident until 4 weeks of treatment or longer
• maintenance dose
• not recommended for child and adolescent under 18 years of age

Interaction

• should not be given concurrently with or within 14 days of stopping an MAOI
• use of alcohol should be minimized or avoided completely
• interaction with other drugs that lower the seizure threshold
• interaction with drugs that induce or inhibit its metabolism

Contraindications

• contraindicated in patients with a seizure disorder
• contraindicated in patients treated with other medications that contain Bupropion
• contraindicated in patients with epilepsy
• contraindicated in patients with bulimia or anorexia nervosa
• contraindicated in patients taking MAO inhibitors
• contraindicated in patients with allergic response to Bupropion or its ingredients

Side Effects

• agitation, anxiety, and insomnia
• fever, dry mouth, headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, constipation, tremor, sweating, skin rashes
• hypersensitivity reactions

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy Category C
• should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed
• decision regarding breastfeeding should be made

Precautions & Warnings

• extreme caution in patients with history of seizure disorders, severe hepatic cirrhosis, CNS tumour, abrupt withdrawal from alcohol or Benzodiazepines
• use with caution in patients with other risk factors for seizures
• use with caution in patients with bipolar depression, psychoses, recent history of myocardial infarction, unstable heart disease, hepatic or renal impairment
