Indications

• Mild-to-moderate hypertension
• Severe hypertension
• Congestive heart failure

Pharmacology

• Antihypertensive activity
• Inhibition of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE)
• Decreased levels of angiotensin II
• Increased plasma renin activity
• Decreased aldosterone secretion
• Absorption rate of oral dose
• Renal excretion of drug and metabolites

Dosage & Administration

• Initial dose for mild-to-moderate hypertension in adults
• Initial dose for severe hypertension in adults
• Initial dose for heart failure in adults
• Usual maintenance dose for hypertension and heart failure in adults
• Maximum dose for hypertension and heart failure in adults
• Dosage adjustment intervals
• Dosage timing in relation to meals
• Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients

Interaction

• Coadministration with aliskiren in patients with diabetes
• Periodic monitoring of renal function

Contraindications

• History of hypersensitivity to captopril
• Contra-indicated in pregnancy
• Not to be used in women of child-bearing potential without effective contraception
