Indications
- Mild-to-moderate hypertension
- Severe hypertension
- Congestive heart failure
Pharmacology
- Sulfhydryl-containing analog of proline
- Antihypertensive activity
- Competitive inhibition of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE)
- Plasma renin activity increase
- Aldosterone secretion decrease
- Rapid absorption from GI tract
Dosage & Administration
- Initial dose of 12.5 mg twice daily for mild-to-moderate hypertension
- Max maintenance dose of 50 mg twice daily for mild-to-moderate hypertension
- Starting dose of 12.5 mg b.d. for severe hypertension
- Max dose of 50 mg t.d.s. for severe hypertension
- Starting dose of 6.25mg or 12.5mg for heart failure
- Max maintenance dose of 25mg three times a day for heart failure
- Captopril intake 1 hour before meals for maximum absorption
- No established safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients
Interaction
- Do not coadminister aliskiren with Topril in diabetic patients
- Periodic renal function monitoring
Contraindications
- Previous hypersensitivity to captopril
- Contra-indicated in pregnancy
- Not for women of child-bearing potential without effective contraception
