Description
- Reduces the viscosity of non-infected secretions in the respiratory tract
- Mucolytic action due to breaking disulphide bonds and altering local ionic charges
- Alters composition of mucin secreted by the respiratory mucosa
Indications
- Expectoration in upper respiratory inflammation (pharyngitis, laryngitis)
- Expectoration in acute bronchitis
- Expectoration in bronchial asthma
- Expectoration in chronic bronchitis
- Expectoration in bronchiectasis
- Expectoration in pulmonary tuberculosis
- Drainage in chronic sinusitis
- Drainage in otitis media with effusion
Mode of Action
- Reduces viscosity of mucus
- Breaks disulphide bonds in mucus
- Alters local ionic charges in mucus
- Changes composition of mucin secreted by respiratory mucosa
Dosage & Administration
- Initial dosage of 2250 mg daily for adults
- Reduced to 1500 mg daily for adults when a satisfactory response is obtained
- Normal daily dose for children is 20 mg/kg body weight
- 62.5-125 mg 4 times daily for children aged 2-5 years
- 250 mg 3 times daily for children aged 6-12 years
- No established dosage for infants

Contraindications
- Contraindicated in active peptic ulceration
- Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to the drug
