Indications
- Expectoration in upper respiratory inflammation (pharyngitis, laryngitis)
- Expectoration in acute bronchitis
- Expectoration in bronchial asthma
- Expectoration in chronic bronchitis
- Expectoration in bronchiectasis
- Expectoration in pulmonary tuberculosis
- Drainage in chronic sinusitis
- Drainage in otitis media with effusion
Pharmacology
- Reduces viscosity of non-infected secretions in the respiratory tract
- Breaks disulphide bonds in mucus
- Alters local ionic charges affecting mucus viscosity
- Alters composition of mucin secreted by respiratory mucosa
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage based on initial dosage of 2250 mg daily in divided doses
- Reduced to 1500 mg daily in divided doses for adults
- Normal daily dose for children is 20 mg/kg body weight
- Dosage for 2-5 years old: 62.5-125 mg 4 times daily
- Dosage for 6-12 years old: 250 mg 3 times daily
- No established dosage for infants

Contraindications
- Contraindicated in active peptic ulceration
- Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to the drug
