Indications
- Treatment and prophylaxis of iron, folic acid, zinc, vitamin-B complex, and vitamin-C deficiency
- Specifically during pregnancy and lactation
Composition
- Elemental Iron [as Carbonyl iron] INN 50 mg
- Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate BP 61.80 mg equivalent to Zinc 22.50 mg
- Folic Acid BP 0.5 mg
- Nicotinamide BP 10 mg
- Riboflavin BP 2 mg
- Pyridoxine Hydrochloride BP 1 mg
- Ascorbic Acid USP 50 mg
- Thiamine Mononitrate BP 2 mg
Pharmacology
- Carbonyl Iron is more effective and safer choice of Iron supplementation
- Folic acid is required for normal healthy development of the neural tube
- Vitamin B Complex is required for the growth and development of unborn babies
- Vitamin C plays a role in the structure of collagen in the fetal membrane
- Zinc is a critical nutrient for fetal growth & development, and central nervous system development & function
Dosage & Administration
- Adult: One capsule daily before food or as directed by the physician
- Use in Children & Adolescents: Upon consultation with a doctor
Interaction
- Carbonyl Iron decreases the absorption of certain antibiotics and medications
- Folic Acid interacts with antiepileptic drugs
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients
- Presence of haemolytic anaemia for iron therapy
Side Effects
- Allergic sensitization following oral administration of Folic acid
- Constipation from oral iron preparation
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Advisable to avoid use of any drug during the first trimester if possible
- Prophylaxis of Iron deficiency justified during the remainder of the pregnancy
Precautions & Warnings
- Care should be taken in patients who may develop iron overload
- Iron chelates with tetracycline and absorption may be impaired
Overdose Effects
- Symptoms of Carbonyl Iron overdose include decreased energy, nausea, abdominal pain, tarry stool, weak, rapid pulse, fever, coma, seizures
