Description
- Arilol is used in the treatment of mild, moderate, or severe heart failure of ischemic or cardiomyopathic origin in conjunction with other medications to reduce disease progression. It is also used in the treatment of hypertension and angina pectoris.
Indications
- Treatment of mild, moderate, or severe heart failure of ischemic or cardiomyopathic origin
- Reduction of cardiovascular death and hospitalization
- Usage in patients unable to tolerate ACE inhibitor
- Usage in patients not receiving digitalis, hydralazine, or nitrate therapy
Pharmacology
- Non-selective antagonism of β-adrenergic receptors
- α-adrenergic antagonistic activity
- Antiproliferative properties
- Scavenger of reactive free oxidant radicals
- Used in the treatment of hypertension, angina pectoris, and congestive heart failure
DosageAdministration
- Initial dose of 12.5mg once daily for hypertension, increased to 25mg once daily
- Initial dose of 12.5mg twice daily for angina pectoris, increased to 25mg twice daily
- Initial dose of 3.125mg twice daily for heart failure, increased gradually up to maximum tolerable dose
Interaction
- Increased levels of digoxin when taken together
- 60% decrease in Cmax and AUC with rifampin
- No alteration in in vitro plasma protein binding of warfarin
- Potential potentiation of pressor reaction with clonidine
Contraindications
- Decompensated heart failure requiring intravenous inotropic therapy
- Bronchial asthma or related bronchospastic conditions
- Second or third-degree AV block
- Sick sinus syndrome without permanent pacemaker
- Cardiogenic shock
- Severe bradycardia
