Description
Abaclor is indicated for respiratory tract infections, otitis media, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, urinary tract infections, skin and skin structure infections. It has stability against beta-lactamase, and is active against various organisms including Streptococci, Staphylococci, E. coli, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella, and Haemophilus influenzae.
Dosage and Administration
- Adult dose: 250 mg every 8 hours, Pediatric dose: 20 mg/kg/day
- Maximum dosage: 4 g/day for adults, 1 g/day for children
- Dosage adjustments for renal impairment not usually required, Shortened half-life during hemodialysis
Interaction
- False-positive reaction for glucose in urine with certain tests
- Potential increased anticoagulant effect and prothrombin time when co-administered with oral anticoagulants
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
- Rare reports of transient hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice, fever, abdominal pain, and superinfection
Pregnancy and Lactation
Use during pregnancy if clearly needed, Caution during nursing

- Avoid use in absence of proven bacterial infection
- Risk of drug-resistant bacteria with prolonged use
- Caution with history of gastrointestinal disease or colitis
