Description

  • Semisynthetic third generation oral cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Broad-spectrum bactericidal activity
  • Indicated for Community Acquired Pneumonia, Acute Exacerbations of Chronic Bronchitis, Acute Maxillary Sinusitis, Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis, Acute Bacterial Otitis Media, Uncomplicated Skin and Skin Structure Infections
  • Dosage: 600 mg total daily dose for all infections
  • Different dosage schedules for various infections
  • Interaction precautions with antacids, iron supplements, and probenecid
  • Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to cephalosporin class of antibiotics
  • Common side effects include diarrhea, vaginal moniliasis, nausea, vomiting, headache, rash
  • Pregnancy category B, caution advised for use during pregnancy and lactation
  • Precaution for patients with a history of colitis or renal insufficiency

Interaction

  • Antacids: Ridicef should be taken at least 2 hours interval of antacid administration
  • Iron supplement: Ridicef should be taken at least 2 hours interval of iron supplement administration
  • Probencid: Inhibits the renal excretion of Ridicef

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Category: B
  • Studies: No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Breast milk: Cefdinir was not detected in the breast milk after administration of single 600 mg doses

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution: Prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of colitis
  • Renal insufficiency: Total daily dose should be reduced in patients with transient or persistent renal insufficiency (creatinine clearance <30 ml/min)

  • Room temperature: Usable within 7 days if kept at room temperature
  • Refrigerator: Usable within 14 days if kept in the refrigerator (2-8°C)
