Dosage
- 1 gm IV 12 hourly for 10 days
- 2 gm IV 8 hourly for 7 days
- 0.5-1 gm IV/IM 12 hourly for 7-10 days
- 2 gm IV 12 hourly for 10 days
- 50 mg/kg/dose, every 12 hours for pediatric patients up to 40 kg in weight
Indications
- Treatment of moderate to severe pneumonia caused by susceptible microorganisms
- Empiric therapy for febrile neutropenic patients
- Treatment of uncomplicated and complicated urinary tract infections
- Treatment of uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections
- Treatment of complicated intra-abdominal infections
Mode of Action
- Bactericidal action
- Disrupts synthesis of peptidoglycan layer of bacterial cell walls
Interaction
- Renal function should be monitored carefully when administered with aminoglycosides
- Nephrotoxicity potential with concurrent administration of potent diuretics
Contraindications
- Immediate hypersensitivity reactions to cefepime or cephalosporin class of antibiotics

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Category B in pregnancy
- Excretion in human breast milk in very low concentrations
Precautions & Warnings
- Use in absence of proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection may increase risk of drug-resistant bacteria
- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible microorganisms
- Associated with fall in prothrombin activity
- Prescribed with caution in individuals with history of gastrointestinal disease
Use in Special Populations
- Max dose for pediatric patients should not exceed recommended adult dose
- Serious adverse events in geriatric patients with renal insufficiency
- No dosage adjustment needed for impaired hepatic function
- Dose adjustment required for impaired renal function
Overdose Effects
- Careful observation and supportive treatment required for patients who receive an overdose
- Hemodialysis recommended in the presence of renal insufficiency

Reconstitution
- Administered intravenously over approximately 30 minutes
- Compatible with various IV infusion fluids and diluents for intramuscular administration
