Description

  • Fourth generation Cephalosporin indicated for the treatment of various infections caused by susceptible strains of microorganisms.

DosageAndAdministration

  • Administered intravenously over approximately 30 minutes
  • Dosage varies based on the type and severity of infection

Indications

  • Treatment of pneumonia (moderate to severe)
  • Treatment of febrile neutropenia
  • Treatment of urinary tract infections
  • Treatment of skin and skin structure infections
  • Treatment of intra-abdominal infections

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal with the same mode of action as other beta-lactam antibiotics
  • Disrupts the synthesis of the peptidoglycan layer of bacterial cell walls
  • Facilitated by transpeptidases known as penicillin binding proteins (PBPs)

Interaction

  • Monitor renal function if administering high doses of aminoglycosides with Fourgen
  • Nephrotoxicity reported with concomitant administration of other cephalosporins with potent diuretics such as furosemide

Contraindications

  • Immediate hypersensitivity reactions to cefepime or the cephalosporin class of antibiotics
  • Penicillin or other betalactum antibiotics

PregnancyAndLactation

  • Pregnancy Category B
  • Excreted in human breast milk in very low concentrations
  • Caution advised when administered to nursing women

PrecautionsAndWarnings

  • Avoid prescribing in the absence of bacterial infection or prophylactic indication
  • Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible microorganisms
  • Associated with a fall in prothrombin activity
  • Should be prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease

UseInSpecialPopulations

  • Maximum dose for pediatric patients should not exceed the recommended adult dose
  • Serious adverse events reported in geriatric patients with renal insufficiency

OverdoseEffects

  • Patients who receive an overdose should be carefully observed and given supportive treatment
  • Hemodialysis recommended in the presence of renal insufficiency
