Description
- Fourth generation Cephalosporin indicated for the treatment of various infections caused by susceptible strains of microorganisms.
DosageAndAdministration
- Administered intravenously over approximately 30 minutes
- Dosage varies based on the type and severity of infection
Indications
- Treatment of pneumonia (moderate to severe)
- Treatment of febrile neutropenia
- Treatment of urinary tract infections
- Treatment of skin and skin structure infections
- Treatment of intra-abdominal infections
Pharmacology
- Bactericidal with the same mode of action as other beta-lactam antibiotics
- Disrupts the synthesis of the peptidoglycan layer of bacterial cell walls
- Facilitated by transpeptidases known as penicillin binding proteins (PBPs)
Interaction
- Monitor renal function if administering high doses of aminoglycosides with Fourgen
- Nephrotoxicity reported with concomitant administration of other cephalosporins with potent diuretics such as furosemide
Contraindications
- Immediate hypersensitivity reactions to cefepime or the cephalosporin class of antibiotics
- Penicillin or other betalactum antibiotics

- Excreted in human breast milk in very low concentrations
- Caution advised when administered to nursing women

- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible microorganisms
- Associated with a fall in prothrombin activity
- Should be prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease

- Maximum dose for pediatric patients should not exceed the recommended adult dose
- Serious adverse events reported in geriatric patients with renal insufficiency
OverdoseEffects
- Patients who receive an overdose should be carefully observed and given supportive treatment
- Hemodialysis recommended in the presence of renal insufficiency
