Indications

  • Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Acute Bacterial Otitis Media caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae
  • Acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae
  • Lower respiratory tract infections including pneumonia caused by Staphylococcus aureus
  • Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
  • Uncomplicated skin and skin-structure infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus
  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections
  • Bone and Joint Infections
  • Uncomplicated Gonorrhea
  • Early Lyme Disease
  • Septicemia
  • Meningitis
  • Switch therapy (Injectable to oral)

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal second generation cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Active against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative susceptible organisms
  • Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis

  • Dosage for adolescents and adults (13 years and older)
  • Dosage for pharyngitis/tonsillitis
  • Dosage for acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis
  • Dosage for acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
  • Dosage for secondary bacterial infections of acute bronchitis

Interaction

  • Concomitant administration of probenecid increases the area under the serum concentration versus time curve by 50%
  • Drug that reduces gastric acidity may result in a lower bioavailability

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to cephalosporin
  • Contraindicated in patients with Pseudomembranous Colitis

  • Prolonged administration may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible microorganisms
  • Rarely renal dysfunction

  • Rarely serum sickness like urticaria

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Should be avoided in the first trimester if possible
  • Can be used in later pregnancy to treat urinary and other infections
  • Excreted into the breast milk in small quantities

Precautions & Warnings

  • Given with care to patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
  • Given with care to patients with history of colitis
