Indications

Pharmacology
- Semisynthetic analogue of Cephalosporin C
- Kills bacteria by interfering in the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall
- Active by mouth
Dosage & Administration
- Usual dose for adults: 250 mg to 500 mg every 6 hours
- Maximum dose for children: 4 g daily
- Different recommended doses based on children's weight
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin group of antibiotics
Side Effects

- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Abdominal discomfort
- Pseudomembranous colitis
- Skin rash
- Angioedema
- Rise in serum aminotransferases
- Eosinophilia
- Neutropenia
- Superinfection with resistant microorganisms
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category B
- May be used during pregnancy when essential
- Found in the milk of nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Given with caution in patients with renal impairment
- May give a false positive reaction for glucose with copper reduction reagent
- Positive results to Coombs’ test reported
- Caution when administered to nursing mothers
