Indications

  • Respiratory tract infections
  • Genito-urinary tract infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Ear, Nose and Throat infections
  • Bone infections

Pharmacology

  • Bacterial cell wall interference
  • Mechanical stability of cell wall
  • Inhibition of transpeptidase enzyme
  • Weakening of bacterial cell wall

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual adult dose of 250 mg to 500 mg every 6 hours
  • Increased dose of 3 g to 6 g daily for severe infections
  • Children's weight-based recommended doses
  • Total daily dose divided for streptococcal pharyngitis

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin group of antibiotics

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Pseudomembranous colitis symptoms
  • Skin rash
  • Angioedema
  • Rise in serum aminotransferases
  • Eosinophilia
  • Neutropenia
  • Superinfection with resistant microorganisms, particularly candida

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy Category B
  • Cautious use during pregnancy
  • Found in the milk of nursing mothers

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution in patients with renal impairment
  • False positive reaction for glucose in urine
  • Positive results to Coombs’ test reported
  • No evidence of teratogenicity in animal tests
  • Cautious use during nursing
