Indications
- Clinically useful for serious infections
- Reserved for susceptible antimicrobial organisms
- Initiate antibiotic therapy based on clinical impression
- Perform in vitro sensitivity tests concurrently
- Discontinue based on in vitro studies results
Pharmacology
- Bacteriostatic effect on Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria
- Active against rickettsiae and Vibrio cholerae
- Interferes with protein synthesis
- Rapid absorption from GI tract
- Mainly excreted in urine
Dosage & Administration
- Prescribed at recommended doses
- Expect inhibition at 5-20 mcg/ml concentrations
- Close observation of patient required
- Dosage adjustment for hepatic or renal impairment
- Lower doses may not achieve therapeutic levels
Interaction
- Retards biotransformation of certain drugs
- Should be used with caution with specific antibiotics
- Rifampin therapy reduces Chlorphen concentrations
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in hypersensitivity or toxic reaction history
- Avoid in treatment of trivial infections
- Not indicated for colds or viral influenza
Precautions & Warnings
- Monitor hematologic functions closely
- Hematologic determinations may detect early peripheral changes
Overdose Effects
- Toxic levels exceeding 25 mcg/ml
- May cause serious hemopoietic effects
- Charcoal hemoperfusion may be effective in overdose removal
