Pharmacology

  • Alkylamine antihistamine
  • Histamine H1-receptor blocking agent
  • Less sedation than promethazine
  • Blocks H1-receptor competitively

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult dose: 4 mg every 4-6 hours
  • Maximum adult dose: 24 mg daily
  • Child dose (6-12 years): 2 mg every 4-6 hours
  • Maximum child dose (6-12 years): 12 mg daily
  • Child dose (2-5 years): 1 mg every 4-6 hours
  • Maximum child dose (2-5 years): 6 mg daily
  • Child dose (1-2 years): 1 mg twice daily
  • Not recommended for use in children below 1 year

Interaction

  • Incompatible with calcium chloride
  • Incompatible with kanamycin sulfate
  • Incompatible with noradrenaline acid tartrate
  • Incompatible with pentobarbital sodium
  • Incompatible with meglumine adipiodone

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to chlorpheniramine
  • Not for use in newborn or premature infants

  • CNS depression
  • CNS stimulation
  • Tinnitus
  • Blurred vision
  • Dizziness
  • Hypotension
  • More likely in children: Stimulation and atropine-like signs and symptoms
