Indications

  • Treatment of steroid responsive inflammatory ocular conditions
  • Post-operative inflammation
  • Ocular inflammation associated with infection
  • Ear infections accompanied by inflammation
  • Otitis externa
  • Otitis media

Pharmacology

  • Anti-inflammatory action
  • Anti-allergic action
  • Reduction of prostaglandin synthesis
  • Inhibition of neutrophil infiltration
  • Bactericidal action against gram-negative and gram-positive organisms
  • Interference with DNA gyrase

Dosage & Administration

  • 1 drop for eye every 4-6 hours
  • Increased dosage for initial 24-48 hours
  • 4 drops for ear 2 times daily for 7 days in pediatric patients with typanostomy tube
  • 4 drops for ear 2 times daily for 7 days in acute otitis externa
  • Pediatric use not established below 1 year

Interaction

  • Elevation of plasma concentrations of theophylline
  • Interference with the metabolism of caffeine
  • Enhancement of effects of oral anticoagulant warfarin
  • Transient elevations in serum creatinine in patients receiving cyclosporin concomitantly

  • Hypersensitivity to any ingredient
  • Herpes simplex and other viral conditions
  • Mycosis
  • Glaucoma
  • Newborn babies
  • Fungal diseases of ocular or auricular structures

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use during pregnancy if benefit justifies risk to the fetus
  • Caution when used by nursing mothers

Precautions & Warnings

  • Consider possibility of fungal infections after long-term steroid dosing
  • Monitor for overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms
  • Monitor for glaucoma, optic nerve damage, visual defects, and cataract formation
  • Routinely monitor intraocular pressure
