Description

Refla is a glucocorticoid used for indications such as anaphylaxis, asthma, severe hypersensitivity reactions, rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile chronic arthritis, polymyalgia rheumatica, systemic lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, mixed connective tissue disease, and many more.

DosageAndAdministration

  • Adults:
    • Up to 120 mg/day for acute disorders
    • Maintenance doses range from 3-18 mg/day for most conditions
  • Children:
    • Usual maintenance dose for juvenile chronic arthritis is between 0.25-1.0 mg/kg/day
  • Withdrawal: Gradual dose reduction for patients receiving more than physiological doses for greater than 3 weeks

Pharmacology

Deflazacort provides anti-inflammatory action by inhibiting Phospholipase A2 enzyme and decreases the release of certain chemicals in the immune system.

Interaction

Metabolized in the liver, maintenance dose may need adjustment with liver enzyme inducers or inhibitors
