Indications

  • Treatment of hypertension

Pharmacology

  • Amlodipine is a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker
  • Valsartan blocks the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of Angiotensin II

Dosage & Administration

  • Recommended daily doses for Amlodipine and Valsartan
  • Antihypertensive effects increase with increasing doses

Elderly patients

  • Initiation dosage at 2.5 mg

Renal Impairment

  • No initial dosage adjustment for mild or moderate impairment
  • Titrate slowly in severe impairment

Hepatic Impairment

  • No initial dosage adjustment for mild or moderate insufficiency
  • Titrate slowly in hepatic impairment

Interaction

  • No specific drug interaction studies conducted for the combination

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to any components

Side Effects

  • Mild and transient in nature
  • Common side effects include peripheral edema, nasal congestion, sore throat, etc.

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy Category D
  • Potential transfer to human milk
  • Consideration for nursing mothers

Precautions & Warnings

  • Avoid fetal exposure
  • Assess for hypotension
  • Warn patients with severe obstructive coronary artery disease about the risk of myocardial infarction or increased angina
