Indications

Pharmacology
- Montelukast is a selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist that inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: Montelukast 10 mg tablet once daily
- Pediatric dosage for 6-14 years: Montelukast 5 mg tablet once daily
- Pediatric dosage for 2-5 years: Montelukast 4 mg tablet once daily
- Pediatric dosage for 6 months-5 years: Montelukast 4 mg oral granules once daily
- Hepatic Insufficiency: No dosage adjustment required
- Renal Insufficiency: No dosage adjustment recommended
- Elderly use: Similar pharmacokinetic profile and oral bioavailability to younger adults
Interaction
- No clinically important effects on the pharmacokinetics of several drugs
- Used concomitantly with a wide range of commonly prescribed drugs without evidence of clinical adverse interactions
- Phenobarbital decreased the AUC by approximately 40%
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of this product
Side Effects
- Common: Diarrhoea, fever, gastrointestinal discomfort, headache, nausea, vomiting, skin reactions, upper respiratory tract infection
- Uncommon: Akathisia, anxiety, arthralgia, asthenia, abnormal behavior, depression, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, haemorrhage, irritability, malaise, muscle complaints, oedema, seizure, abnormal sensation, sleep disorders
- Rare: Angioedema, concentration impaired, disorientation, eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis, erythema nodosum, hallucination, hepatic disorders, memory loss, palpitations, pulmonary eosinophilia, suicidal tendencies, tremor
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Crosses the placenta in rats and rabbits
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution in nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Not indicated for use in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
- Appropriate rescue medication should be available
- Not to be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids
- Not to be used as monotherapy for the treatment of exercise-induced bronchospasm
- Avoidance in patients with known aspirin sensitivity

- Supportive measures to be employed in case of overdose
