Indications
- Improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus
- Reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and established cardiovascular disease
Pharmacology
- Sodium glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitor
- Reduces renal absorption of glucose
- Contributes to reduced hyperglycemia, weight loss, and reduced blood pressure
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dose: 10 mg once daily
- Dose may be increased to 25 mg once daily for patients tolerating the medication
- Correction of volume depletion prior to initiation is recommended
Interaction
- Increased urine volume when co-administered with diuretics
- Increased risk of hypoglycemia when co-administered with insulin or insulin secretagogues
- Not recommended to monitor glycemic control with urine glucose tests or 1,5-AG assay
Contraindications
- History of serious hypersensitivity reaction to Empagliflozin or its ingredients
- Severe renal impairment
- End-stage renal disease or dialysis

- Weakness
- Dizziness
- Increased thirstiness
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus
- Not recommended when breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings
- Assessment of renal function recommended prior to initiation
- Not initiated if eGFR is less than 45 ml/min/1.73 m^2
- No dose adjustment needed if eGFR is greater than or equal to 45 ml/min/1.73 m^2
Overdose Effects
- Usual supportive measures should be employed
- Removal of Ajardy by hemodialysis has not been studied
